This episode begins with the wedding of Aureliano Segundo and Fernanda. There's no one in attendance; this wedding most likely takes place in Fernanda's town. She takes this wedding as her true birth. For Aureliano, it's both the beginning and end of his happiness.
They return to Macondo, and the town welcomes the couple warmly. Petra Cotes hears the news but chooses to stay at home rather than try to interfere -- a perfectly respectable way for a jilted woman to act. The Buendias greet the newlyweds warmly. Ursula and Santa Sofia in the lead. Ursula is hunched over and looks like's beginning to have issues getting about. Jose Arcadio suggests they all get a drink.
Colonel Aureliano works diligently on making gold fish in the workshop. Aureliano Segundo gets to work showing off his awesome dance moves at Catarinos. Fernanda is participating, but she is giving deer in headlights. Fernanda is very much a fish out of water. She is not used to joy, dancing, or affection. She goes to a bathhouse for a moment alone, only to find Remedios the Beauty bathing in the tub. She apologizes and quickly leaves. There doesn't seem to be many places she can go to find space to herself.
The party continues way into the night. Ursula suggests she gets some rest, since she's had a long journey. Fernanda believes that would be disrespectful to the guests and to Aureliano – who might feel alone. Ursula finds this funny, as her party animal son is never for want of company.
But all parties must end, and eventually Fernanda and Aureliano Segundo are alone in the bedroom. Despite the large quantities of alcohol he imbibed, Aureliano is very ready to enjoy conjugal bliss with his new wife. Fernanda tells him this is quite impossible and shows him a calendar. She has marked off Holy Week, Sundays, holy days of obligation, first Fridays, retreats, and penances. Or to say it differently, the only days she can have sex are days they can conceive. It amounts to 42 days a calendar year. Aureliano doesn't make a fuss, thinking it's just a matter of time before Fernanda loosens up.
At breakfast the next day, Jose Arcadio Segundo approaches his brother with his newest scheme – blueprints for a new railroad. The dream of a boat denied, the railroad is a new transportation option that may connect Macondo to the rest of the world. Jose Arcadio says that this time, It's all planned out. Ursula muses on how history keeps repeating itself.
Fernanda meets Amaranta the next day. Despite her age and frown, Amaranta looks beautiful in a maroon-colored top. Fernanda remarks that she's much nicer and younger than they made her sound. Not sure why she would make such a remark. She has just met her, and she's already making judgments about how nice she is and also revealing that her nephews talk smack about her. Interesting also that Fernanda calls Amaranta their great aunt. Technically this is true, since Arcadio was her nephew. But I thought that this was a closely guarded family secret.
Big mistake to piss off Amaranta. As expected, Amaranta responds coldly, saying, "The city girl thinks she's a queen." Fernanda tries to defend herself with some history about her family, but Amaranta dismisses her title and lets her know that this town is inhabited by cattle rustlers and bastards. Somehow Amaranta out-iced the ice queen. It is interesting to contemplate what about Fernanda turns the family off so much. Ursula and Santa Sofia take to her easily enough. We have seen this family take in complete stranger easily and act as if they have been here for years. Is it the way Fernanda goes about things, acting as if she owns the place?
Next Fernanda decides to poke her nose into Colonel Aureliano's business. She picks up one of his precious fish, and he startles her from the shadows. He has not forgotten what she has done and who she was with on the night of Carnivale. He knows her people tried to kill him. And that she is a spy for the Conservatives.
Ursula interrupts this berating by calling for Fernanda from the doorway. Intriguingly, she doesn't address Aureliano at all. Almost like he's a ghost rather than a live human being. For Ursula, she realizes it's no use. Aureliano is going to be the conspiracy theorist he is. But he does ask for his fish back first. Ursula mentions that he is just a grumpy old man. But she also tells Fernanda a piece of Aureliano's history and tells him about Remedios – a fact Fernanda will one day use against him. Ursula may mean well, but it's never a good idea to just give out people's private stories. You never know what they will do with them.
Meanwhile Jose Arcadio Segundo goes to the town mayor to request permission to build a railroad. The mayor or mayor's assistant says he must appeal to the governor and that things are different in the outside world. The name Buendia means little to anyone outside Macondo.
We catch up with Aureliano Triste, who has begun selling his own frozen ice concoctions, based on an idea from Jose Arcadio Buendia's journals. This is also a callback to Aureliano feeling the promise of possibility by touching ice. When Aureliano Triste mentions that he has other aspirations, Jose Arcadio Segundo tells him about the railroad idea and asks him to join the effort.

Aureliano Segundo has the gall to try to have sex with Fernanda on a day prohibited by the calendar, but he mentions Father Isabel told him that their marriage allows them to have sex whenever. Fernanda says that her Mother Superior said he would try to talk her into it. Aureliano leaves for a huffy walk.
He arrives at the newest entertainment spot in Macondo – a new movie theater! When did this happen? They are showing DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE, admission 15 centavos. It's a silent movie, with accompaniment provided by a hardworking piano player. The crowd is boisterous and yelling at the screen in warning. Aureliano notices that Petra Cotes has arrived with a date. He walks out, miserable to see her with another man. Petra runs after him. I guess she misses him, too.
Jose Arcadio Segundo crosses the mountains to reach the governor, determined to get permission to build the railroad. The clerk gives him a long checklist of to-do items he must fulfill to get approval. When Macondo was first founded, there was no government needed. There was perfect harmony. It is because of the desire for innovation that the government got a foothold in Macondo. Now the grandson wants to build a railroad and needs permission, but the building of the railroad will create more connection and more possibility for interference.
Fernanda is not dissuaded by the family hostility. She begins to redecorate the house with fine linens and candlesticks. She sets up crosses and statues of saints. Colonel Aureliano finds ways to sabotage her efforts and removes these items any way he can. She insists that Remedios the Beauty begin wearing clothes and puts her in a stuffy blue navy dress. With that remedied, Fernanda decides it's time to take Remedios to the church for confession.
Remedios warns her that Ursula doesn't like it when she leaves the house, but Fernanda just brushes off this statement. She learns soon enough the reason for Ursula's hesitation. Of course, Remedios immediately begins to get itchy. As they near the church, all the men of the town stop and stare, dumbfounded by Remedios' beauty. The men give chase, trying to catch Remedios, and she and Fernanda runs home.
They return home out of breath and are confronted by Colonel Aureliano and Amaranta. Aureliano is livid that she would take Remedios to confession. What would Remedios have to confess for? She is the most sane and pure of heart of anyone. Amaranta isn't quite as indignant, but she doesn't like Fernanda, so she speaks to her in Pig Latin. It's an interesting contrast between Amaranta and Remedios. One is so buttoned up, the other so loose and free. If anything Amaranta is similar to Fernanda. It's a wonder these two didn't become friends.
Later that night, it's finally time for a calendar-permitted day of sex. Fernanda chants to herself, "It's not for vice or fornication, but to offer a child in service to the Lord." She whispers this over and over. Aureliano Segundo prepares to take of Fernanda's nightdress, but she shakes him off, presenting him only with a single opening in the nightgown that gives him access to between her legs. This is the only way he can access her for sex. There will be no kissing or foreplay. It's a wonder anyone could operate in this way.
Later that evening Aureliano Segundo gets up and leaves the house. He bursts through the door of Petra Cotes house, and the two of them reconcile in a mad rush. The morning after Petra announces that he should tell Fernanda. Fair is fair. I don't really believe that Petra wanted to be fair to Fernanda, so much as she wants her to know that she isn't the only queen of Aureliano's heart. Aureliano promises he will do so.
Colonel Aureliano and Gerineldo talk over coffee. The Conservatives are insisting that the carnival massacre was planned by Liberals. Aureliano tells him he thinks Fernanda is a spy, and Gerineldo assures him that she knows nothing. The Colonel regrets laying down arms. Gerineldo muses that he lost out on so much, like having a family and growing old with someone he loves.
Back at home, Aureliano Segundo is happy and in the money again. Apparently his reunification with Petra has acted as a catalyst for more productive animal breeding. The household pantries are restocked, and everyone has been given gifts. He and Fernanda continue their weird sex rituals, and he and Petra continue their friends with massive benefits arrangement. But he hasn't followed through with his promise to come clean with Fernanda.
We then discover that Gerineldo has begun courting Amaranta. She shows him the intricacies of thread and the sewing machine. Love is in the air and all seems right with the world.
After many wrestling matches with paperwork, Jose Arcadio Segundo and Aureliano Triste finally get a nice approved stamp on their paperwork. The railroad work can now begin.
One night Aureliano Segundo comes home to find Fernanda waiting up for him. She had made him dinner. He makes excuses about working late in the animal pens. They walk about town and Aureliano even goes to confession with Fernanda. They pass Petra Cotes in the street, and Petra realizes Aureliano has not followed through.

Fernanda rushes to tell Ursula and Santa Sofia some news. But it's not about a baby. Instead, Fernanda joyfully reports that Aureliano has agreed to her plan to add a devotional room to the house where she can hold life-size saints and an altar. Colonel Aureliano walks by and makes a sarcastic comment. That's when Fernanda decides to weaponize a guise of sympathy. She lets him know that she knows about losing his wife. Not the right moment to bring this up. Aureliano is rightly outraged that Ursula would tell Fernanda his business and for Fernanda to think she had the right to talk about something so personal. As usual, Ursula suggests she just ignore him.
I have to stop here and wonder what happened to Ursula's fire? The last time we saw her stand up to Aureliano was when he tried to kick soldiers out of her house. Yes, she is getting old, but her words still have power.
Just then, a gift arrives from Fernanda's father. He has sent her a letter and a bunch of family heirlooms. She tries to reply but can't seem to find the words without feeling outrage. She only wants to write about good things.
At the marketplace, Aureliano Segundo buys some flowers in a weak attempt to apologize to Petra Cotes. She lets him know that if he wants to come over again, he needs to tell Fernanda. Mad respect to Petra Cotes, who is above groveling. She could have been a daughter to Pilar. It's a wonder we haven't seen them together.
Gerineldo waits in the parlor for Amaranta. He takes the moment to propose to Amaranta. It's very sweet, But we know how this will go. Amaranta tells him he needs to leave and never come back. As an excuse, she says that he must be in love with the Colonel and wants to use her to stay close to him. Gerineldo leaves and Aureliano watches his friend depart, sipping on his coffee. I wish that Gerineldo had the confidence to stand up to her, but he leaves abashed. What can we say about Amaranta? Why does she deny herself the possibility that a man could love her?
Aureliano Segundo sadly drinks by himself. And in his hour of need, he is consoled by none other than Pilar, who happens to be his grandmother. She chides him for giving up. With that confidence booster, he finally goes to talk to Fernanda. He tells her their life is beautiful, and he loves her, but he needs to keep seeing another woman.
He does a fairly good job trying to sell this arrangement, citing her power over the animals to breed. This helps make money, which helps everyone. He doesn't talk about how happy she makes him or that being with her is like being with the sun. Fernanda is rightly outraged. She would have rather stayed home making funeral wreaths.
Fernanda begins packing her bags, and then Ursula shows up. She uses her special gift to show her the path to acceptance. Ursula agrees that Aureliano Segundo likes to party, but that he's a good man, too. What is the harm of him having his sexual needs met by another woman? Fernanda is shocked. She feels a wife's duty is to run a Christian household.
Ursula redirects her that she will be giving a father and a loving home to the child in her belly. Ursula states that the baby is a boy and the two of them will raise him to be the pope. And this baby will be the first one free from sin. This is a wild statement to make. Her implication seems to be that every other baby has been tainted somehow. Does Ursula really believe that Fernanda's saintly exterior makes this baby especially pure? She ends her prophecy with Fernanda will be the queen of this house and will raise the baby to her standards.
Those seem to be the magic words for Fernanda. She tells Aureliano Segundo she accepts his offer on these conditions. She will make all household decisions and will no longer have to put up with mockery from the Colonel or Amaranta. Aureliano Segundo must also agree to die at the Buendia house. Lastly, they will now sleep in separate bedrooms since she's pregnant. Aureliano Segundo is ecstatic to hear he will be a father and decides to throw a party. This sounds like a terrible arrangement to me.
Fernanda wastes no time bringing in her statues to set up the devotional room. Colonel Aureliano is disgusted but says nothing. After a time jump, Fernanda's baby is born. It's a boy. The baby will be named Jose Arcadio. She is now pregnant with the second child. The house is unrecognizable with its new fancy decorations and dark curtains that block out the light. Remedios is wearing a nightdress. When she writes home, she lies about her life and reports that all is joy.
She is now the Queen of Macondo. Meanwhile railroad tracks are being laid nearby.
