100 Years of Solitude is back for season 2, which debuted on August 5, 2026. Adapted from the renowned magical realism novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, it covers the seven generations of the Buendia family in the town of Macondo. This season opener picks up right where we left off with Colonel Aureliano becoming an evil warlord but also follow the third generation closely, with a focus on Aureliano Jose, Jose Arcadio Segundo, Aureliano Segundo, and Remedios the Beauty.
We open on the Buendia house. There's an old photo, the wind is howling. We hear a baby crying. The house and the town are long vacated. Church bells are ringing. Melquiades' final keys are revealed to Aureliano Babilonia. We haven't met him yet. The first line is tied to the tree and the last is eaten by ants.
We then go back to when season 1 ended. The women of town lead by Ursula walk to the square. Aureliano is in his headquarters in the middle of a chalk circle only he can enter. He is clipping his stache. His posse tells him that there are women who want to talk to him (not his mother, not Ursula – just some women). Colonel Aureliano just asks Aureliano Jose to find his tweezers.
The women shout that he should free General Moncada, whom he has arrested. Aureliano tells them they are violating curfew. Ursula reminds him that she is his mother, and she can still whup him good if needed.
General Moncada is in that same prison cell that Aureliano once occupied. Aureliano makes an an excuse that it was the revolution – not he – who sentenced Moncada to death, as if the revolution is somehow this entity that must be obeyed. Moncada replies that the war councils are a farce. The two men continue this tete-a-tete, with Aureliano saying Moncada would have done the same thing. Moncada accuses Aureliano of being a hypocrite. He says he despises the military, yet he has become just like them.
The execution takes place. Everyone is supposed to stay inside due to curfew. The twins discuss this in their shared bedroom. These are Arcadio's sons. Jose Arcadio Segundo decides to sneak out to witness the execution, while Aureliano Segundo wants no part of it. Both know this is how their father died. Jose Arcadio Segundo is deeply traumatized by this moment. Jose Arcadio insists that Moncada is still alive. Colonel Aureliano is unmoved by his outburst.
Jose Arcadio Segundo is so upset he chooses to abscond from all war and take refuge in the church. The town is divided by beliefs about who is better – the liberals or the conservatives. The head cleric tries to remind them this is a house of God, not a public square.
Meanwhile Aureliano Segundo spends time as his grandfather did and his father in the workshop. He sees visions of Melquides who speaks to him. They meet every morning. The only thing he won't discuss is his manuscripts.
A man walks out of the local store, accompanied by ominous music. He was given a small object. He passes the object to a women with a basket. The basket exchanges hands again and again. Finally, the contents are added to a cup of coffee in a tin cup. The coffee is delivered to Colonel Aureliano. Aureliano has been poisoned.
Santa Sofia runs to tell Ursula, who fetches a basket of eggs, vinegar, and two sprigs of dill to whip up an antidote. Mama Ursual has a decision to make. Should she allow her overlord son to die or save him? She chooses to save him. She whips it all up and demands to be left alone with Aureliano.
There's an unpleasant squelching noise and then enormous amounts of vomit and worms come out of Aureliano. They give him loads of strychnine. Turns out this can lead to death.
Aureliano Jose shows up at the Buendia house. Remedios the Beauty answers the door naked. She has been doing this for 20 years and can't stop now. She says it's too hot. Aureliano Jose arrives at Amaranta's door. Just like when he was a child, he tries to seduce her, and she lets him for a bit. She might have gone for it, but he decides to open his big mouth and tell her he told a colonel about him and his aunt. She tells him to get lost, although she doesn't decide to cover up her breast.
Back at the church Jose Arcadio Segundo has taken to ringing the bells as chosen duty. He also assist with the cockfights in the parish courtyard. Kind of an odd church activity. So you can listen to the organ and jon a cockfight. I guess this is how the church makes its money?
Aureliano thanks his mother for saving his life. She asks if he will stay in Macondo until he is recovered, and he says no. She speaks a blessing over him and leaves. Aureliano appoints his old friend Gerineldo as civil and military leader. And also to take care of the people who tried to kill him.
The colonel is none to pleased to realize that Aureliano Jose has gone missing. Since his son has left, he assumes he is no longer part of the revolution and kind of writes him off. Aureliano Jose sits at the bar, drinking, while a brawl starts between the liberals and the conservatives. This reminds me of the Waffle House SNL skit. A nice trumpet reveille accompanies while brawling breaks out all over Aureliano Jose as he leaves the bar.

He stands outside the Buendia house and throws a bottle against the house. Just like his two uncles, Aureliano Jose finds reprieve in the house of PIlar Ternera. She is now older, but still smoking up a storm. PIlar has lost hope yet her heart has never turned bitter. They become accomplices in solitude.
Colonel Aureliano and Gerineldo send a series of telegrams to each other. They talk twice a week. These telegrams don't consist of much. Weather updates and family updates.
Jose Arcadio Segundo is now serving at the church alongside the priest. As the preaches about the writings of Solomon, Remedios the Beauty begins to remove her clothing in church. On the way home from church, Amaranta sees Aureliano Jose drinking up a storm. She runs home to escape his gaze.
Just as she closes the door, there's a knock, but it's not a lovestruck Aureliano Jose. Instead, it's a women and teenage boy. History repeats itself. Ursula takes one look at the boy and knows what this means. This is Aureliano's son. Ursula asks for her notebook. She gives them money, a necklace, and has their name written down in her book. Dozens of them show up regularly. Colonel Aurelianio is a busy man.
The father asks Jose Arcadio Segundo to find 4 bottles of rum. But there's only one left, so they will drink communion wine instead. Just then a woman shows up named Petra Cotes. She has just arrived in Macondo. He is Father Antonio Isabel. Petra asks if she can raffle off her rabbits off at the cockfight. Father Isabel says it depends on which political party she is part of.
Aureliano Jose shows up at the cockfight. Jose Arcadio Segundo tries to send him away to avoid trouble. Just as suspected, as soon as the crowd sees him, they all get mad because he's a liberal. Aureliano Jose spits upon love and leaves in a huff.
Later that evening, Jose Arcadio Segundo and Petra Cotes sleep together alongside the cockfighting pit, while Jose Arcadio counts to 10. Meanwhile Colonel Aureliano is imbibing in similar activities with some nameless woman inside of his tent. The woman is shot in the back of the head. He wakes up. It was just a dream. He calls for Carnicero.
An emissary has arrived with a message from the President. Aureliano asks for a ruana to keeps him warm. He is maybe feeling exposed, vulnerable, and exposed. The emissary can barely spit out the words. He is very nervous to meet this notorious colonel. He reads the message from the President, who asks Aureliano to consider an armistice. Aureliano writes a response turning down his request. Adrift in his loneliness of his power, Aureliano begins to lose his way.
At the Macondo marketplace, a man stands up and reads from the local paper. The story reads that Aureliano has sent a macabre message to the President. We then see the emissary's head in a box, with Aureliano's response shoved in his mouth. Is this what Aureliano intended? Based on the narration, perhaps not. We see Gerineldo absorbing this. He looks concerned to hear this latest update about the man he has been following.
Pilar is reading the story to Aureliano Jose. She asks him to please stay home, since there will be trouble tonight. He assures her he is just going to the theater. What kind of trouble could that cause? She promises to introduce him to someone if he will just stay home. Aureliano Jose will meet this mystery person later. I thought she might read him his cards to convince him. Just like Arcadio, Pilar tries to find her son a companion that will make him happy.
At the theater, Aureliano Jose is watching a production of El Puñal del Godo or The Dagger of the Goth, written by Jose Zorrilla. He starts to get rowdy during the play, as it becomes apparent the play has been altered to make political statements. Jose Arcadio Segundo is also attending with Petra Cotes. Aureliano Jose gets into a tussle with a conservative. The conservative gets very personal and makes rude comments about Pilar. This is like a repeat of Jose Arcadio Primero all over again. The opponent shoots him right in the chest. Across town, you see Pilar and her mystery woman, Carmelito Montiel, getting ready for Aureliano Jose's expected arrival. The noise of the shot reaches across town.
The liberals in the crowd respond by chasing the conservative assailant. You notice no one tried to stop the fight itself. Aureliano Jose would have found happiness, contentment, and seven children in the arms of Carmelito. Once again, Jose Arcadio Segundo is traumatized by seeing a man mutilated in front of him.
His funeral is attended by Gerineldo, PIlar, one of the twins, Amaranta, Ursula, Remedios the Beauty, and Santa Sofia. Everyone fades away except Amaranta and Pilar. Pilar, his mother, and Amaranta, the woman he loved and whom we know loved him in return. The sign outside the cemetery reads HUMAN VANITIES END HERE.
Months later, Colonel Aureliano returns to Macondo. He arrives alone wrapped in a blanket. He was tired of the vicious cycle of war. No hugs are exchanged. He asks them if they mind sharing a table with a killer. Aureliano Segundo blames Colonel Aureliano for Aureliano Jose's death. Aureliano deflects and just says that wars are always harder on the innocent.
Ursula shows Aureliano the 17 names of his sons. He doesn't know the names of any of these women. Gerineldo comes to see Aureliano, and Ursula greets him warmly. Some lawyers are here to see the colonel. The lawyers ask him again to consider the armistice. He will have a hand in ruling all the towns he liberated in exchange for 3 things: He must renounce review of exiting property titles, he must renounced the fight against clerical influence, and he must get rid of any ideas of natural and illegitimate children been equal. So people like Arcadio, Aureliano Jose, and all of his sons would forever be considered second-class citizens.
Aureliano is disappointed. After 20 years, he realizes this has all been a fight for power. And he is tired of it. He decides to sign the paper. Gerineldo calls his acts treason. Aureliano tells him to say goodbye to his mother. He will now have to answer to the Council of War. Gerineldo turns in his weapon and tells his old friend that his heart is rotten.
Ursula bursts in, shaking with rage. She tells him that if he goes through with it, she will kill him herself. Aureliano gives no response, but the next morning, he releases Gerineldo. There are now papers all over town announcing that Aureliano has signed the armistice. Aureliano goes to the doctor and asks where his heart is located. The doctor marks the spot with a big red dot – perhaps iodine?
Back in the workshop Jose Arcadio Segundo visits his brother, Aureliano Segundo. You can hear a baby crying. And this isn't the first time I have heard that baby. Is this a supernatural sound? Aureliano Segundo hears a knock and opens the door to see Petra Cotes. She kisses him warmly, not knowing that this is not the Buendia she has been kissing. Aureliano Segundo does not correct Petra. I read in the book that Petra never knows that she never finds out that these two are twins.
The colonel arrives on horseback to the the treaty signing. He looks very dapper in a tuxedo. He requests that his men receive military pensions. They agree to his terms. After he signs the treaty, he reaches under the table and pulls out a pistol, shooting himself in the heart. Back at home, Ursula's concoction boils over on the stove. But wait, his eyes are still open.
