Here is the landing page for all of Steve and Lindsey's recaps of the new Netflix version of Little House on the Prairie, debuting in July of 2026.
The series is based on the original book series published by Laura Ingalls Wilder and is not in any way an attempt to reboot the very popular original TV series. Interestingly, though, the shows have a closer connection than you might realize. While everyone remembers Michael Landon as the talent behind the OG Little House, before Michael Landon was on the scene, Ed Friendly was the man in charge. It was he who bought the rights to adapt the books and hired Michael Landon to direct the pilot. Michael agreed, if he could play Charles.
As the show continued and earned success, creative differences caused conflict between Friendly and Landon. Friendly distanced himself from the day-to-day show operations, but he remained an executive producer. He wanted to make a faithful adaptation of the books, and you can see this in the pilot episode, which feels very different from the show as a whole. It's much more focused on the hardship of working the land.
Now today, Ed's son Trip Friendly is doing his best to honor his father's original vision. How will audiences respond to his new version? Only the future will tell the tale. You can find my personal review inside the recaps.
