00:02.20

Lindsey

Hello, I'm Lindsey of the 1 of My Stories podcast.

00:06.30

Steve Barnes

And I'm Steve Barnes of the Sweet Child of Time podcast.

00:10.62

Lindsey

And this is our anticipatory discussion of the upcoming Little House on the Prairie 2026 remake that's coming out on Netflix July 9th.

00:15.45

Steve Barnes

the

00:21.41

Steve Barnes

July 9th.

00:22.01

Lindsey

Yes, we have the date correct, finally.

00:25.40

Steve Barnes

Finally.

00:27.48

Lindsey

Just to recap what we've done so far, at the end of May, we both released a podcast discussion about the original Little House series.

00:35.66

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

00:35.77

Lindsey

And then just last week, we got to interview Jocko Sims.

00:40.38

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

00:40.57

Lindsey

So you can go back and listen to both of those on our mutual podcast feeds. But today we are just talking about the new series coming to Netflix on July 9th, which we just said.

00:54.33

Lindsey

And as Jocko Sims stressed to us, and we will now stress to you, that this new show is a faithful adaptation of the books as opposed to a television reboot.

01:08.02

Lindsey

So all of you haters, just know that they're not trying to recreate Michael Landon's vision.

01:13.89

Steve Barnes

I know.

01:17.27

Lindsey

And we are sworn to secrecy. Until that date, July 9th, about what we...

01:21.34

Steve Barnes

Right.

01:24.89

Lindsey

We both watched the show, full disclosure, we have both watched it.

01:27.53

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

01:30.36

Lindsey

But for this first episode here, which is our pre-show discussion, we're only going to talk about... We're not going to give you any spoilers or tell you even what our reactions of the show...

01:38.67

Steve Barnes

Nope.

01:43.37

Steve Barnes

We're not allowed to.

01:44.57

Lindsey

Right...

01:45.08

Steve Barnes

but

01:46.36

Lindsey

So we're we're just going to tell you about some kind of news that we think might be beneficial to you about the show, things about the cast and et cetera, et cetera.

01:57.72

Lindsey

And how did this even get made in the first place? Hmm.

02:01.33

Steve Barnes

That's right. Yeah. I guess that's where I can come in. And I'll also say that like the trailer, I think two separate trailers and two separate teasers have been released at this point. So watching those, you learn, you can learn a lot just from watching those trailers. And we're going to go over like pretty much everything that,

02:20.47

Steve Barnes

you can see and ascertain from those trailers. But yeah, Little House is on the rise right now because i think the main reason is the 50th anniversary.

02:32.58

Steve Barnes

2024 marked the 50th anniversary of Little House coming on our television sets. And along with that 50th anniversary, they've really been i mean, they've been amping up towards this, this reboot.

02:44.86

Steve Barnes

But in addition to that, they've um they've added things like the Little House 24 hour channel. Like if you have Pluto TV or Roku or I believe there is one more of those type channels like that.

02:59.90

Steve Barnes

um they You can just pop on Little House of the Prairie.

03:00.22

Lindsey

Thank you.

03:03.47

Steve Barnes

They have a 24 hour channel where they just stream it. And you can just, you'll just pop in at any time they play them in order. So, I mean, if you want to make your own, um you know, marathon watch of Little House, you can just pop on Pluto a TV and pop in anytime.

03:20.60

Lindsey

Absolutely. It's like a law and order marathon around here. I mean, any you can stop, you know, go to any hotel, you can pretty much know that law and order, law and order sv they're all going to be available.

03:26.68

Steve Barnes

Yeah.

03:32.92

Lindsey

And in fact, Steve, like, I think it's, you brought up the fact that it's on the rise and that there's a 50th anniversary. And I think we probably saw the same thing today that on the Facebook group, some people that have gone on

03:39.68

Steve Barnes

That's

03:49.62

Lindsey

a trip or some kind of convention or something actually got the opportunity to watch the first episode of the new show. So there's some, there have been some people that have seen it.

03:59.83

Steve Barnes

like right

04:02.62

Lindsey

We, they are not as cool as us where we've seen all of it, but they there have been some people that this point have seen the first episode or telling the world their opinions. They're not critics.

04:12.81

Steve Barnes

Oh, yeah.

04:13.17

Lindsey

So they don't, they don't aren't beholden to the same rules that we are. But I'll toss it back to you. I just wanted to interject that in case people are hearing that, oh, yeah, this person said they watched it.

04:21.40

Steve Barnes

oh yeah

04:24.86

Lindsey

Some people have seen the first episode now if they're attending these anniversary events.

04:30.55

Steve Barnes

Yeah, like those red carpet things. I saw, yeah, did see the same post, the person.

04:32.55

Lindsey

Mm-hmm.

04:34.87

Steve Barnes

And yeah, she she gave her opinion there. And I don't know if she saw the whole series or just saw a couple of episodes. And we've seen the whole series a couple of times.

04:42.21

Lindsey

One

04:45.46

Steve Barnes

And I wanted to shout you out, Lindsey, before I get too far into things, because something that our listeners don't know is during that Jocko interview, we only released like a six minute interview, but the interview was like 15 20 minutes long.

04:59.10

Steve Barnes

And in the middle of the interview, while we were recording, Jocko Sims asked me directly like what I thought about the series and if I liked it or not. And I was just ready to answer him and get all into it.

05:12.46

Steve Barnes

And Lindsey put up the stop sign and was like, no, Ryan said not to do that. so thank you very much for doing that, because otherwise I would have blabbed to everyone in the world about what I thought about it.

05:24.89

Steve Barnes

So I'm glad had for that.

05:26.45

Lindsey

I would have just edited it. just would have edited it out of the podcast, Steve. I had your back. I had your back.

05:31.77

Steve Barnes

That's true. All right. Well, you have it back from the get-go because you stopped even Jocko because I think you know both of us were like, oh, we're running off of the mouth a little too much here. um But yeah, this whole anniversary thing, we can thank the friendly family for this because the friendly family, um I can't remember the fellow's first name, but um the rights to the series got...

05:53.05

Steve Barnes

passed down to, let's say, Mr. Friendly. And Trip Friendly, oh no, no, Trip Friendly is the son.

05:55.79

Lindsey

Trip.

05:58.94

Steve Barnes

There was an original, friend Ed Friendly, there we go.

05:59.44

Lindsey

Right. Ed.

06:02.22

Steve Barnes

So when Ed Friendly passed away, he passed the rights on to his son, Trip. And Trip is a big fan of the Little House franchise and of the books too. And so,

06:13.75

Steve Barnes

I think he's kind of spearheaded this production. And besides him, i assume that Trip Friendly is a male. Besides him, all the names and the executive producers and the directors and writers and stuff are all female.

06:27.86

Steve Barnes

We got Rebecca Sonensheim is going to be the showrunner and executive producer. And it doesn't say on here, but I'm pretty sure she directs a couple episodes too. And the other executive producers are Joy Gorman Weddles for the Joy Coalition, Dana Fox, Susanna Fogle. And then we got Trip Friendly from the Friendly Family Productions is what they're called.

06:53.18

Lindsey

That's right. And about this reboot, this is what what this is what a good old buddy Trip Friendly had to say. Isn't that a nice name, Trip Friendly?

07:01.69

Steve Barnes

Absolutely.

07:01.72

Lindsey

i mean,

07:02.09

Steve Barnes

you should be a country singer.

07:03.83

Lindsey

but it has been a long-held dream of mine to carry on my father's legacy and adapt Wilder's classic American stories for a 21st century audience in a way that brings together fans of both the books and the original television series, said Trip Friendly in a statement.

07:22.81

Lindsey

I am thrilled by our talented creative team led by Rebecca Sonnenschein, who are bringing these beloved stories about family, community, and survival to longtime fans and new generations.

07:37.53

Lindsey

And you might be saying to yourself, my father's legacy, who is this trip-friendly guy either? Is he related to Michael Landon and just had a name change? Well, we already mentioned Ed Friendly, that the lu kind name dropped him.

07:52.98

Lindsey

ah So. Trip Friendly's father, Ed, secured the TV and movie rights to the Wilder note novels that led to the NBC drama in 1974.

08:04.04

Lindsey

So it was Ed Friendly who originally had this vision and he and Michael Landon were a partnership and apparently creative differences between them soured their relationship over time.

08:17.29

Lindsey

And he.

08:17.73

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

08:19.32

Lindsey

remained an executive producer, but kind of distanced himself from the production. Now, so there must there might be some juicy gossip in here somewhere, but we're not going to go there and spend too much time with that.

08:26.88

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

08:35.72

Lindsey

But just not to let you know, the Friendly Family has been with the Little House series from the beginning, apparently, even though probably nobody would Nobody can name him.

08:47.17

Lindsey

Everybody can name Michael Landon. So I just think it's neat that there's, you know, I guess what I would say about all this is that there are always many people that are responsible for a thing coming to pass.

09:02.08

Lindsey

And, but often only one person gets the fame and the glory, just like with Twin Peaks, you know, there was David Lynch and then there was,

09:02.44

Steve Barnes

I

09:13.91

Lindsey

The other guy, which I can't remember saying. I think his name is Mark something. Mark Frost, I think is his name. No relation to Ben Frost.

09:22.74

Steve Barnes

i was just getting ready to ask you that.

09:23.01

Lindsey

Yeah. yeah

09:24.22

Steve Barnes

But yeah, I think Twin Peaks, I think David Lynch alone. That's right.

09:27.19

Lindsey

<unk> That's right. So just just keep that in mind. is Trip Friendly has a connection. It's almost like the Beach Boys. You know, you've got the Wilson brothers.

09:36.57

Steve Barnes

Yes.

09:36.66

Lindsey

And then you've got, again, that Mike Love.

09:38.42

Steve Barnes

Mike love.

09:40.54

Lindsey

Thank you, Mike Love. And there was creative differences, but they're both still talking about the Beach Boys and representing the Beach Boys in their own way.

09:49.21

Steve Barnes

okay

09:52.54

Steve Barnes

Yeah. And Ed friendly kind of gets his, um, panache from working with Rose Wilder, who was the, um, the editor of all these books. So yeah, he's been in it way longer than 1974.

10:05.00

Lindsey

Mm-hmm.

10:05.17

Steve Barnes

um But yeah, I guess at this point, I'm going to talk about hopefully the show because i want to discuss like the real history of the Ingalls and the real history of the Ingalls family is followed pretty faithfully in Laura's books.

10:12.08

Lindsey

Yeah.

10:21.01

Steve Barnes

She kind of glosses over some moves and sometimes she doesn't even mention where they are. And you just kind of have to like know by i association or research, like what state they're in.

10:33.56

Steve Barnes

But she started her life in Wisconsin. They were a quartet and they lived in the little house in the big woods. And in 1869, Charles Ingalls sold that house so they could move to Independence, Kansas, which is where he heard that there was going to be a land opportunity for you know farmers.

10:55.54

Steve Barnes

And so they moved to Independence, kansas Kansas, and they had their third daughter, Carrie, there in 1870. So that deal with the house that he sold in Wisconsin fell through pretty quickly, actually. So they had to move back to their Wisconsin home, back to the little house in the big woods. And they remained there until 1873.

11:21.28

Steve Barnes

1873 is when they left the little house in the big woods with little Carrie and they went to plum Creek. And that is where we know about the little, we know about plum Creek because that's where Walnut Grove is.

11:34.30

Steve Barnes

The TV series is based there. And then that third book in the series, which is called little house on the Prairie is based there, but they only lived there for about two years.

11:45.18

Steve Barnes

um They moved to Minnesota in 1874. And then after two years of failed crops, they briefly moved. I'm sorry.

11:56.82

Steve Barnes

Whatever, 1874, they stayed with Carolyn's brother, Peter, briefly in Minnesota. And then in 1876, they moved to Iowa where they ran a hotel.

12:08.09

Steve Barnes

Charles was like the town butcher and the justice of the peace there. it Sounds like he had like some cool jobs and he had like some panache or like some, um I don't know, some elevation in the community, but we know from history that the family was always pretty destitute and poor. So sometimes it sounds like he had like a cool job, like he ran a hotel or he was a justice of the peace, but he was still always living hand to mouth. The family was, um, but they lived in there in Iowa for three years, 1879, they moved to their final home and dismiss South Dakota. And that's where they all retired.

12:45.88

Steve Barnes

So, um, Yeah, where what we know from this story is we see from the trailer that they start in a little house in the big woods, which is where everything always starts. And then their journey begins.

13:01.40

Lindsey

Right. So, you know, the the upcoming season will least have the independence. And, you know, I said but but we're already talking about the old show, but interestingly enough, that pilot episode of the original Little House series, that was the independence episode.

13:21.37

Lindsey

So that first pilot episode is what we're seeing covered in these in these books, you know, um So or at least, you know, that's, we know there's independence.

13:36.79

Steve Barnes

Yeah.

13:37.01

Lindsey

It's in the trailer. It's what I'm trying to say.

13:38.39

Steve Barnes

Yes. They shout it out loud. They're like, the town of Independence. It's like, they make it pretty obvious that's where they are.

13:44.18

Lindsey

Yeah.

13:45.86

Steve Barnes

So nobody's like fooled that they're like in Walnut Grove.

13:48.06

Lindsey

Yeah. So again, but even though they have that, Steve, in the trailer and everybody can see it, again, we so we already have people that are complaining that oh, where's Nellie Olsen?

14:01.96

Lindsey

Where's this? Where's that? And it's like, well, they weren't in Independence. They were in Walnut Grove. So maybe they're not go they're not in Walnut Grove yet.

14:12.63

Lindsey

you know so let's

14:13.37

Steve Barnes

Yeah, exactly.

14:15.16

Lindsey

But are you saying that Charles, we so used we saw him in the books being a butcher? Or is that just a known history that they...

14:22.54

Steve Barnes

That's a known history. I've yet to see him be a butcher in the books. I'm on book eight right now, and he is still not a butcher yet, and they're not in Iowa yet either.

14:26.94

Lindsey

Okay. Okay.

14:30.87

Lindsey

ah

14:31.34

Steve Barnes

So I guess that happens later on.

14:31.54

Lindsey

i was I was thinking it was going to be a Gangs of New York, Bill the Butcher situation.

14:33.12

Steve Barnes

Ooh.

14:36.54

Lindsey

That's not going to happen with Charles, I guess.

14:39.06

Steve Barnes

He's like the opposite of Bill the Butcher there, right?

14:40.22

Lindsey

it

14:43.61

Lindsey

yeah

14:43.77

Steve Barnes

He would charm the socks off that guy.

14:48.09

Lindsey

Okay, so, yeah.

14:48.31

Steve Barnes

But yeah, we're, we're going to be like, Oh, I was, I was going to lead us on to the next thing we were going to talk about. Cause we, um we know that the characters, yeah.

14:54.65

Lindsey

Talking about the characters next? Is that what you're, yeah.

14:56.74

Steve Barnes

The cast of characters.

14:57.17

Lindsey

Yeah. Okay, so yeah, we're gonna I'm going to talk about some characters we've probably known about before a first, and who's playing them. and okay so the first character is Charles Ingalls, of course, and he in this show is played by Luke Bracey.

15:18.48

Lindsey

Luke is from Australia, and you may have seen him in movies like Elvis, Hacksaw Ridge and a very young Luke Bracey was in The Best of Me. One of those Nicholas Sparks adaptations where he's a real dreamboat.

15:37.65

Steve Barnes

Oh.

15:38.58

Lindsey

Steve's giving me a blank look.

15:40.25

Steve Barnes

Yeah, i've I've never seen any of these movies. i don't i

15:43.06

Lindsey

You never, have you seen, have you seen The Notebook?

15:43.22

Steve Barnes

Actually, i don't I don't know any of these actors at all.

15:46.99

Lindsey

That's a Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook.

15:48.60

Steve Barnes

Oh, yeah, of course.

15:48.71

Lindsey

You heard of that one?

15:49.64

Steve Barnes

Of course I have.

15:50.33

Lindsey

You know, it's all moving to a small town, falling in love.

15:50.64

Steve Barnes

um um

15:53.05

Lindsey

It doesn't work out. Then they, There's a tragic, you know, kind of ending.

15:54.65

Steve Barnes

hey

15:59.13

Lindsey

But no spoilers on that. But anyway, he was in the best of me. Just just know that. that

16:05.02

Steve Barnes

And he has a beard. I mean, that's great.

16:07.51

Lindsey

He has a beard.

16:07.70

Steve Barnes

that Me.

16:08.59

Lindsey

That's something that seems very important to all the bearded people in the room right now.

16:14.07

Steve Barnes

yes

16:17.08

Lindsey

Yeah. And honestly, most of the cast, most of the cast, you may be like, I'm not sure I know who that is. And they did we get the press sheets. They tell us where else they've been bit in But I'm not really going to mention that unless I'm like, oh, yeah, most people would probably be familiar with that. So Carolyn is played by Crosby Fitzgerald.

16:42.33

Lindsey

i you know She has some credits. I was not familiar with any of her roles.

16:47.41

Steve Barnes

Yeah, me neither.

16:47.58

Lindsey

One of the things that's notable about her is that she is a redhead. And some people really like red hair. I do. And, ah yeah.

16:56.48

Steve Barnes

I should hope so.

16:57.34

Lindsey

yeah

16:58.39

Steve Barnes

hu

16:59.93

Lindsey

I don't know. For some reason, in the dark discord, they all call me red. They think I'm a redhead or something, ah which i don't I don't know if they're all colorblind or what. But, yeah, Crosby Fitzgerald please plays Ma Ingalls or Carolyn.

17:14.43

Steve Barnes

Oh, fun fact about Crosby, that person you mentioned before that went and saw the premiere got herself a selfie with Crosby Fitzgerald. I was like, heck yeah.

17:21.21

Lindsey

That's right.

17:21.69

Steve Barnes

I wish I was you right now.

17:23.60

Lindsey

That's right. Oh, okay. You want to hang out with Crosby, huh?

17:26.61

Steve Barnes

Yeah. Why not? mean, she seems cool to me.

17:27.64

Lindsey

no

17:28.85

Steve Barnes

i mean, I don't know. i haven't seen her work yet. I don't know. Yeah.

17:32.09

Lindsey

Yeah. Okay. Mary, older sister Mary is played by Skywalker Hughes. Now, was were her parents Star Wars fans? I'm not sure. That's kind of a cool name, Skywalker. I haven't heard that before.

17:48.73

Steve Barnes

I never have either. And I can only assume that her parents were Scott. I mean, we're, we're star Wars fans. If they weren't star Wars fans, then they're very susceptible to pop culture.

17:59.90

Steve Barnes

ah

18:00.90

Lindsey

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. So no, um yeah, no, not necessarily, you know, Mary was known for her, maybe not as much as Nellie was known for her blonde locks, but Mary was in the show, she was known for her blonde hair.

18:15.39

Lindsey

And in this, in this case, she's got sort of like more of ah a chestnut brown or sort of a blonde brown mix.

18:16.76

Steve Barnes

Yeah.

18:22.84

Lindsey

So they, they're obviously not feeling beholden at all to follow the archetypes of what these people have looked like up to this point.

18:32.92

Steve Barnes

Sure, I mean, I think at best we might call her hair dirty blonde, but I think it might even be too brown for that.

18:33.62

Lindsey

Yeah.

18:39.20

Steve Barnes

um But you know, she has the viage the visage of ah of a Mary Ingalls, I would say, you know.

18:46.10

Lindsey

hu Then we have Laura, dear little Laura, played by Alice Halsey.

18:54.84

Steve Barnes

I love her look. I think, I think they nailed the casting with her. Um, cause you know, I can talk freely cause everybody's seen the trailers by now. And I just think she nails the look of Laura and she's really small. And Laura is famously very small as well, like a four foot 10 woman. So I'm on board with this casting.

19:14.24

Lindsey

Hmm. Okay. We also have John Edwards.

19:20.18

Steve Barnes

Yeah, buddy.

19:21.21

Lindsey

Our Mr. Edwards played by Warren Christie. He's from Ireland and he seems to be very beloved on the Hallmark channel. He's played a lot of roles, but he's been in some soap operas.

19:35.06

Lindsey

He's been in some Hallmark channel um romances.

19:36.18

Steve Barnes

Yeah.

19:39.64

Lindsey

So, so ah Apparently, everybody thinks he's very handsome because they're casting him as love interest.

19:49.18

Steve Barnes

I mean, I think he's handsome. Do you? I mean, you're a female of the species. Do you but think he's handsome, a handsome man or not? Just kind of average.

19:56.72

Lindsey

I think he's okay. I think he's okay.

19:58.61

Steve Barnes

Yeah, he's okay.

19:59.57

Lindsey

He's not exactly my my type, but ah I think he's...

19:59.65

Steve Barnes

You're okay, Warren.

20:07.69

Lindsey

It's interesting that, you know, in the original show, Mr. Edwards was kind of a, you know, very much a grisly codger type. And this guy's relatively good looking.

20:16.54

Steve Barnes

Yeah.

20:20.15

Lindsey

So, yeah, just casting differences.

20:22.29

Steve Barnes

I think. I kind of think that, I mean, the original Mr. Edwards was, of course, Isaiah Edwards, and they named this Edwards John Edwards, which is, um I believe Isaiah Edwards had a son named John Edwards.

20:31.99

Lindsey

Yeah.

20:38.43

Steve Barnes

So we can we can take some liberty there.

20:39.00

Lindsey

ohha Yeah.

20:40.95

Steve Barnes

I'm not sure why they chose to go with the name change, but I don't think it really matters because in the books, he was only known as Mr. Edwards. They never said his first name.

20:48.28

Lindsey

Yeah. Yeah.

20:50.01

Steve Barnes

And I kind of think this guy, i think he does a passing job of, um I know he's not supposed to be the TV show, the original series, but I don't know. i i kind of think he did a passing job. He wasn't nowhere near as goofy.

21:04.85

Steve Barnes

I shouldn't be saying too much here.

21:06.42

Lindsey

That's right. You really shouldn't.

21:08.89

Steve Barnes

as

21:09.08

Lindsey

Edit all that out, James, or whoever's doing editing on this, you know.

21:13.14

Steve Barnes

No, leave it in there. Leave it in there. I like John Edwards.

21:16.44

Lindsey

we don't We can't really talk about what we thought of these of them as actors. Just more like what they've done before. Okay.

21:23.90

Steve Barnes

I'm just basing everything off the trailer. You know what saying?

21:25.50

Lindsey

Okay, great.

21:26.45

Steve Barnes

That's it.

21:28.76

Lindsey

We also have Dr. Tan, of course, which we've already talked about, Jocko Sims, friend of the show.

21:31.19

Steve Barnes

Of course. Friend of the show, we can say now.

21:36.43

Lindsey

Yeah. And some of his notable roles are Dr. Floyd Reynolds from the show New Amsterdam. And he also played a role in a show, which I did not bring up during our podcast so that he wouldn't start blushing, but it was called Masters of Sex.

21:43.27

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

21:50.77

Lindsey

I wonder what that show is about. Must be a must.

21:52.89

Steve Barnes

Ooh.

21:54.84

Lindsey

I don't know if it's spicy or what.

21:57.20

Steve Barnes

It's gotta to be, it's got the S-E-X word in it.

22:00.22

Lindsey

It could be. It could be like they're considered masters of sex because they're like, They're studying sex, maybe. You know, it sounds spicier than it is.

22:08.70

Steve Barnes

Oh.

22:10.44

Lindsey

I don't know.

22:12.73

Steve Barnes

My mind's going a different way, but I'll let you continue with the characters from Little House.

22:12.70

Lindsey

add

22:16.86

Lindsey

Okay.

22:17.66

Steve Barnes

but

22:17.82

Lindsey

So then, oh yes. and And I'm talking about, I'm naming characters that are we already know from the books and the show, I guess, to some extent.

22:28.95

Steve Barnes

Yes, that's right.

22:30.58

Lindsey

Okay, so my last one is Adam Scott, which I don't remember him being in the show, so I'm assuming he's just a character in the books.

22:37.24

Steve Barnes

He was not. Yes, that's right.

22:40.22

Lindsey

And he's played by McLean Fish.

22:45.17

Steve Barnes

McLean fish, my dirty fish. but

22:49.66

Lindsey

Now, Steve, now don't be making fun of, try not to make fun of people's names too much, but um but yeah, McLean Fish, again, I didn't see any of his roles that meant anything to me, but, um, so it's nice that we have, we get it, we'll get introduced to this new cast of characters and this for some of them, it'll be maybe their first role where they will get some notoriety.

23:18.89

Steve Barnes

i'm kind of I'm kind of glad that we had like brand new people playing these roles instead of like, you know, maybe Nick Offerman plays Charles Ingalls, you know, I don't know. I'm glad they didn't like get some star power in here. i mean, not that these people aren't stars, but you get my gist that they aren't already known for another role and now they have to fill a new role.

23:42.97

Lindsey

so I have one exception for that, which isn't so much like a particular role, but it's more like a generalization.

23:45.21

Steve Barnes

Sure.

23:51.18

Lindsey

that there are from the In the past couple years, I have met or been exposed to so many wonderful child actors.

24:03.61

Lindsey

and the fact i feel like a lot of times they only get one role and then they kind of disappear.

24:09.59

Steve Barnes

Okay. Okay.

24:10.30

Lindsey

And i I was like, well, they could have with with the children, you know, unless they really wanted somebody, you know, maybe some people maybe some people make the choice that, like, we're going to get pick somebody that's never been in anything before um to give somebody a new opportunity.

24:28.60

Lindsey

But, for instance, like the Welcome to Derry kids, you know, some of them are really good actors, but how long is it going to be before they'll get another role?

24:32.06

Steve Barnes

okay

24:36.73

Lindsey

You know, they kind of, Child actors sometimes get left in the dust. They get one role, they get some some time of fame, and then and then the time is over. So I don't know why. They they maybe could have found some really good child actors. that Not saying these guys aren't good or won't be good, but yeah.

24:55.79

Steve Barnes

I was going to say, I, um, let's see, what's my rebuttal. I do have a rebuttal to that, which is, you know Michael Landon had this vision that little house on the prairie would last forever and be timeless and perhaps trip friendly. It has the same vision.

25:16.68

Steve Barnes

Um, cause it's already been renewed for season two as we speak. I mean, season one hasn't even aired already got a second season, but Maybe they're like really pinning a lot of hopes on this taken off and being multiple seasons and we're going to grow up with this Laura like we grew up with the other Laura, perhaps.

25:33.91

Steve Barnes

Maybe that's their ambition and they won't meet it, but maybe they will meet it. I mean, that's my rebuttal.

25:39.86

Lindsey

Okay. Well, it's not exactly a rebuttal. Rebuttal means an argument. You're more saying, on the other hand, so which could be a rebuttal?

25:50.23

Steve Barnes

I will.

25:50.22

Lindsey

I'm rebutting your rebuttal.

25:50.63

Steve Barnes

i will argue.

25:51.82

Lindsey

I'm rebutting your rebut.

25:51.96

Steve Barnes

i will argue with you. Let's argue instead. Let's argue about the new characters.

25:56.92

Lindsey

Yeah, let's talk about the new characters.

26:00.15

Steve Barnes

Yeah, I got that in my queue here. And I didn't do the cool thing that Lindsey did and looked up where everybody else is from. So maybe Lindsey can chime in if she knows any of these new folks.

26:11.22

Steve Barnes

These are going to be new characters that are... um that i've Since I've read the books and I've seen the original series, these are all brand new characters that have never, their names have never been uttered before. So let's meet them.

26:24.44

Steve Barnes

um First up, we have Eli and Gemma, I'm sorry, Eli and Gemma James. And they're kind of like the the head of this town. Eli is... um

26:37.99

Steve Barnes

We're not exactly sure what he is, but, but he seems like somebody in charge and his wife sure likes to do that too. And they're played by Michael whole. How do you say this last name?

26:49.08

Lindsey

Ho.

26:50.05

Steve Barnes

Oh, I did it right. And Mary Holland. And Mary Holland is the only actor on this show that I recognize from anything previous, because I'm a big fan of um improv comedy. And she, of course, is part of the Wild Horses comedy troupe, along with Lauren Lapkus and others.

27:07.99

Steve Barnes

And I'm just a big fan of Mary Holland, period. So I'm glad to see her in this show. We have a character named Emily Henderson, which is running the store at this town of Independence.

27:21.62

Steve Barnes

And I did not catch the actress's name. It's not on.

27:25.35

Lindsey

Barrett Doss.

27:26.97

Steve Barnes

There you go. That's what we got Lindsey for.

27:27.97

Lindsey

Barrett Doss.

27:28.81

Steve Barnes

I

27:29.85

Lindsey

And she's actually had some notable roles, but I didn't write them down because it was your, this was your gig, your part. So.

27:38.60

Steve Barnes

failed everybody.

27:38.97

Lindsey

but

27:39.80

Steve Barnes

Just um everybody.

27:41.30

Lindsey

Oh, she was in she was in one of those, um ah medical drama. I can't remember which one, but it wasn't yeah ER. Grey's Anatomy.

27:49.78

Steve Barnes

Okay.

27:49.85

Lindsey

She, as the, in one of the later seasons,

27:52.55

Steve Barnes

I watched that one. Yeah.

27:53.50

Lindsey

She's a recurring character. So she seems to have some some creds to her name already.

27:59.26

Steve Barnes

All right. and We got another child actor here. We got a young boy named Caleb and he's played by Cohen. caoreth There we go. a new character named William Mitchell, and he is going to be played by Meegwin Fairbrother. Now these next few characters, these next four characters, including William Mitchell, are playing some of our Osage characters.

28:24.73

Steve Barnes

um So William Mitchell is the the head of that family. His wife is White Sun. She's played by Alyssa Wipanatak. why pan attack Sorry for the pronunciations stumbles here.

28:38.78

Steve Barnes

They have a daughter named Good Eagle and she's played by Ren Gata. And there's also another Osage character named Little Puma played by Xander Cole.

28:50.58

Steve Barnes

And last, we have a new female character named Lacey Obear. She's played by Rebecca Amzelag. So I hope some of those names might ring a bell for you. They did not for me, but we're going to see what these new characters are up to.

29:07.58

Steve Barnes

But yeah, we got the trailer in the teaser, so that might give us some clues about what's happening here. So i'm I just kind of pointed out maybe like 10 or 12 things from the trailer that we noticed that might have some significance.

29:21.69

Steve Barnes

um So yeah, you wanna take that away, Lindsey?

29:24.92

Lindsey

Sure. Well, we have we have a dog that...

29:28.41

Steve Barnes

Yes.

29:28.47

Lindsey

did Did they say Jack or we just like, there's a dog, it must be Jack?

29:33.53

Steve Barnes

we're We're like, there's a dog. It must be Jack. That's what we're doing.

29:37.27

Lindsey

Yeah, because we can't have we can't have the we can't have the wagon journey without Jack.

29:37.65

Steve Barnes

We're hoping his name is Jack.

29:43.78

Lindsey

So we saw the family dog and we're going name him Jack regardless of what they call him.

29:44.38

Steve Barnes

Exactly.

29:50.33

Lindsey

We're going name him Jack.

29:51.96

Steve Barnes

And he looks closer to the the the real Jack in real life too than the TV Jack, which was like a big shaggy dog.

29:52.15

Lindsey

ah

30:01.24

Lindsey

and We also saw them traveling from the big woods in response to an ad for free land.

30:07.64

Steve Barnes

Yeah. Free, right? Yeah. that's what the government says. Yeah. We see them out on the homestead. We see them building a home that we see like some, some saws going down and some logs getting piled up.

30:22.17

Steve Barnes

And at one point we actually see inside the Ingalls home. So we can see like their little tiny little log cabin there. And we see them like nice little spinning scene there.

30:33.40

Lindsey

Yeah, Charles has to be carrying Carolyn over the threshold ah some kind.

30:38.87

Steve Barnes

Always.

30:39.64

Lindsey

Yeah.

30:39.99

Steve Barnes

Yeah.

30:40.95

Lindsey

ah We then see the town of Independence, sort of an upward pan over the town, watching people walking by.

30:47.94

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

30:51.35

Lindsey

up They're raising a church and Charles seems to be leading the fray.

30:57.24

Steve Barnes

Oh, of course, always. He's going to lead us in prayer. He's going to lead us in church. He's going to lead me to heaven. um

31:05.29

Lindsey

you

31:07.61

Steve Barnes

We see Laura always, the... the you know, always the curious one. We see her like eyeballing some Osage kids and there seem to be smiling at each other.

31:19.32

Steve Barnes

And, um, straight from the book and from the original series, we see them playing baseball. They love the beginning. Uh, that's like their big thing. It's like anytime you see the the adults playing a sport, it's almost always baseball.

31:33.82

Lindsey

Right, but it's not vampire baseball.

31:36.60

Steve Barnes

Thank God. That was maybe one of the silliest moments of cinema history.

31:44.28

Lindsey

At the time, thought it was awesome.

31:46.49

Steve Barnes

i did too.

31:46.55

Lindsey

Okay.

31:47.21

Steve Barnes

That's the sad thing about it. We're of course talking about what movie is that from? I can't even remember the name of the movie.

31:52.72

Lindsey

Twilight.

31:53.99

Steve Barnes

We're talking about the twilight scene. Anyway, what else we got?

31:55.58

Lindsey

Sparkly vampires. So... Another thing we see in this trailer, very informative trailer, is the Osage in full paint.

32:07.70

Lindsey

Is it now?

32:07.87

Steve Barnes

Yes.

32:09.88

Lindsey

Some people might think, oh, war paint. But it might just be ceremonial paint.

32:14.61

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

32:15.06

Lindsey

It might be decorative paint.

32:17.58

Steve Barnes

That's right.

32:17.66

Lindsey

But they're they're representing their tribe with within their way.

32:24.28

Steve Barnes

Yes.

32:25.69

Lindsey

We also see Mary talking to a boy.

32:30.14

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm. Too soon to be Adam, probably, but talking to some boy, yeah.

32:36.92

Steve Barnes

See some fiddle playing. um So that's cool. We know that Charles is ah is a fiddle player. And... Maybe this new Charles Ingalls might be able to to vamp, play and fiddle a little better than Michael Plana did. I don't know. We'll see. We'll judge him on that.

32:52.28

Steve Barnes

um We see Dr. Tan. We see the black doctor. So we we can only assume it's Dr. Tan. And since we've interviewed him, I mean, it's pretty obvious it's Dr. Tan. um So instead of Doc Baker, because, you know, he's over in Walnut Grove, maybe. He's a fictional character. Dr. Tan's a real guy and he's here. And that's nice he's represented.

33:14.12

Lindsey

Oh, we only see two young'uns, Ingalls people, though, so...

33:19.24

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

33:20.48

Lindsey

We're all wondering where is Carrie? Is she, is she hanging out in the wagon? is she down the well, the mine shaft, waiting to be rescued?

33:25.91

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

33:30.98

Steve Barnes

Nailed to the roof, perhaps.

00:02.17

Lindsey

Okay, so besides this whole Carrie absence, there were a few things in the trailer that I noticed that we haven't said yet. One was there were wolves.

00:14.71

Lindsey

There seemed to be an illness of some kind. somebodys People are getting sick. We see that.

00:19.73

Steve Barnes

OK.

00:20.33

Lindsey

And just hard times in general. that It's not all fun and games. It's not all fun and baseball and fiddle playing. This is kind of a hard a hard trip they're having.

00:32.82

Lindsey

But they also, we also saw a holiday dinner of some kind. The family was sitting around a table with some new friends. And that was exciting for me because I always liked, I always liked the episodes where they, the Ingalls family were celebrating in, in the old ways and doing things like, you know, getting excited about an orange or a tin cup and things.

00:42.61

Steve Barnes

okay

00:59.51

Lindsey

seeing how some of the foods they might eat or some of the traditions they might have at that time. So I thought that was something to look forward to.

01:07.80

Steve Barnes

Yeah, I'm definitely looking forward to it. um I know that there're they're definitely going to get into the Osage land dispute um because you know we know that Charles was drawn out there to independence because there was supposedly some free land, but Maybe that's the case. We know in real life that what that didn't quite work out great for the Ingalls family. So we're going to see that going down, I suppose.

01:34.66

Steve Barnes

um And yeah, like you were saying about this town of independence, they show like a ah nice overhead shot of it. And it looks like the town is pretty um organized. It's pretty, it's a pretty.

01:46.66

Steve Barnes

It's a real community. I'm not sure if there's a railroad or a post office there, but there's definitely like a hotel. There's definitely a store. So we got, we were going to have some town folk to hang out with. And plus, you know, all those kids in town that we saw the boy, the, the other, the Osage girl, hopefully, hopefully the kids will have some other kids to play with and we'll have some fun in this show.

02:11.44

Lindsey

Mm-hmm.

02:13.03

Steve Barnes

um I'm looking forward to it. I mean, I've already seen it, but I'm looking forward to everybody looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to some dialogue on Facebook, hopefully turning um positive. I'm i'm I'm ready for anything with the general public. Sometimes I get surprised in a bad way with how people perceive things, um but I'm going to remain positive. I'm going to remain hopeful that we're going to have many seasons of this show because i like I like the Little House franchise in general, and that's pretty much all I got to say. um I'm just looking forward to continuing on.

02:52.94

Steve Barnes

And Lindsey, any follow-up thoughts or anything but take us out here?

02:57.62

Lindsey

Yeah, I wanted to mention something that I saw on the Wikipedia page, which I thought was interesting, that I hadn't seen yet.

03:06.49

Steve Barnes

Okay.

03:06.55

Lindsey

And it gets into something we've heard or sort of talked about amongst ourselves or seen other people talk about, is there's this fear that that it's going to be a woke show.

03:18.71

Lindsey

And I thought it was interesting that on January 29th,

03:24.29

Lindsey

2025, there was a tweet from someone named Megan Kelly, who is ah some kind of political commentator.

03:31.87

Steve Barnes

Yeah, I'm well aware. Yes.

03:33.14

Lindsey

Okay. I had never heard of her before. And um so she wrote this post.

03:35.66

Steve Barnes

Okay. I'm sorry.

03:39.23

Lindsey

walk Why are you saying you're sorry? i It wasn't.

03:41.69

Steve Barnes

because Now you know who she is.

03:43.43

Lindsey

but but

03:44.08

Steve Barnes

luck.

03:46.04

Lindsey

um So she she said, Netflix, if you woke-ify a Little House on the Prairie, I will make it my singular mission to absolutely ruin your project.

03:55.00

Steve Barnes

good luck

03:56.57

Lindsey

And and i thought it was i thought it was nice that a lot of the Little House cast got on and responded to her tweet.

04:07.66

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

04:08.02

Lindsey

ah um Allison Argram Dean Butler and Melissa Gilbert all responded in different ways. But ah Alison Argram says, the original show was about as woke as you could get for 1974.

04:16.77

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

04:23.25

Steve Barnes

That's right.

04:23.45

Lindsey

We dealt with everything on Little House in the Prairie, from drug addiction to racism to sexism to spousal abuse, women's rights.

04:31.19

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

04:32.22

Lindsey

We had we had the episode where the women held out for right to own property. Every possible cutting edge social issue was absolutely discussed. but it was done in such a little house in the prairie, what would the Ingalls do kind of way, that I think people just didn't even think of it as being a big deal.

04:49.43

Lindsey

And so we sort of talked about this a little bit, like the fact that it's thought of as this cozy drama, yet there's all of these social issues represented, even sexual assault.

05:01.91

Lindsey

She didn't even say that in her tweet, but we you know the the episode with the the creepy mask where the girl gets sexually assaulted.

05:04.98

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

05:10.02

Lindsey

And the wisdom of Solomon. So back then there were absolutely these social issues being dealt with in these episodes. And so ah some of that shows up. That's not going to be a surprise. But I mean, I saw somebody say, well, that's not woke.

05:28.76

Lindsey

is You know, but we don't what we don't want is a gay couple. It's like.

05:35.89

Lindsey

It's all about that one, you know. So I don't know. i just I just, thought it was, I thought it was interesting that this was represented well and that the cast is the ones that kind of rushed to the defense and, and said that, Hey, we're worse that we are in support of not just our show, but we're supporting this new show.

05:54.16

Steve Barnes

Mm-hmm.

05:59.60

Lindsey

that we think that like none of the cast is saying, why are they remaking our show? You know, they're they're excited and interested. And so we should we should be too and at least give it a chance. Now, that doesn't mean that we're going to love it. But just just on the fact that just and that just because it's being made, it shouldn't be a precious thing that nobody that nobody can touch. Like, yeah.

06:28.89

Steve Barnes

Good point. I wanted to just um to add one more little point on top of that, since you're making me think about it now. I think I don't understand this, the whole division about it, because that's kind of what I thought the beauty of Little House, the franchise itself is.

06:47.87

Steve Barnes

Because you could be like extreme conservative and look at Little House and say, yes, that's how it's supposed to be. a man and a woman and their children and they pray and they respect their elders and they, you know, they, they're part of a community. That's, this is what, this is representative of what I believe.

07:08.08

Steve Barnes

And then a completely like progressive person could be like, yes, this is a guy who like, you know, loves his children and he'll do anything for them. And like, despite their differences and he'll accept any neighbor and he lives by the the Christian values that he preaches and he lives by on himself.

07:28.08

Steve Barnes

I just think that anybody from any political side could look at it and say, that is what I like. And that is what I, I don't know. i just, I just think it's a more of a unifying show.

07:39.42

Steve Barnes

So it very much confuses me when, um when divisions are brought up like this. So boo, Megan Kelly, boo, boo, boo.

07:45.24

Lindsey

Right. Yeah. Yeah. Because, I mean, I know that you've just been posting things in the Facebook group, for instance, just saying, who's playing Charles? Who's playing Mr. Edwards? Who's playing Caroline?

07:58.65

Lindsey

And then there's so many people that will say, nope, nope, nope. Not going to watch it. I hate it already.

08:05.13

Steve Barnes

Yeah.

08:05.62

Lindsey

Like, based on what? Based on what exactly?

08:09.92

Steve Barnes

Yep.

08:09.94

Lindsey

It's okay to not want to watch it, but to but to like say you hate something. I mean, I know you're excited to get comments on your posts. So you're probably like, keep the comments coming. Even if even if it's negative, at least people are responding and and joining in the discussion.

08:25.10

Lindsey

And i guess I guess that is better than nothing when you post things and nobody responds.

08:29.67

Steve Barnes

Sure.

08:30.50

Lindsey

That's kind of sad. So even if their reactions are negative, it's um it means that they're invested and could be brought over to the to the light, maybe.

08:31.76

Steve Barnes

Right.

08:40.35

Steve Barnes

Sure. They care about the property and there's something about it that appeals to them.

08:40.95

Lindsey

Yeah. Yeah.

08:44.29

Steve Barnes

So I think this new show could offer them something, you know, give it a shot.

08:47.56

Lindsey

Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah.

08:51.05
