We began our recaps of the Colombian Netflix series, 100 YEARS OF SOLITUDE, adapted from the renowned magical realism novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It covers the seven generations of the Buendia family in the town of Macondo. In this first episode, we explore the rocky roots of the marriage between Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula, establish how the town of Macondo was founded and discovered, and find out that our main character is Aureliano Buendia, who is facing a firing squad and remembering the day he discovered ice.

We also speculate on what the story might be saying about connection, isolation, and politics in the world of Colombia.
