Scream VI: Ghostface in a New York State of Mind

Scream VI trades in the cozy small town of Woodsboro for the concrete streets of New York, giving the Ghostface killer a new playground to pillage. In this video, I offer my spoiler-free thoughts about this latest film in the franchise. Scream VI opens in theaters on March 10th, 2023.

Scream VI is produced by Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media. It's also released by the collective known as Radio Silence. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, written by James Vanderbilt & Guy Busick, and starring Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, Hayden Panettiere, Courteney Cox, Jack Champion, Henrzy Czerny, Dermot Mulroney, and more.

Treading an impressive line between subverting expectations while also giving extra doses of all the things we like best about these movies, Scream VI abounds with twists, witty banter, and teeth-clenching suspense. Trading in a cozy Woodsboro for the concrete pavements of New York gives the Ghostface killer a new playground to toy with. Instead of a isolated house, danger lurks in a crowded restaurant or a high-rise building. The taint of Woodsboro has expanded to a national plague, and the world-building must evolve to match the crescendo.

[L-R]: Melissa Barrera as SAM, Jenna Ortega as TARA in SCREAM VI

The brilliant script by James Vanderbilt & Guy Busick is expertly delivered by the powerhouse quartet of Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding, who really gel in their second film together.

Not all the side characters deliver that same level of expertise, but they don't distract us from enjoying the proceedings. Melissa Barrera as Sam is the alpha of this series. Her personification as final girl and the conflicted daughter of the deceased Billy Loomis has only made her more intriguing. Jasmin Savoy Brown also shines as Mindy, the heir of Randy's encyclopedic knowledge of the horror genre. Mindy delivers the blistering monologue that lets viewers know exactly what type of movie we are living.

The first Scream released in 1996. Twenty-seven years later, these movies are still going strong.

Release info: Scream VI is in theaters March 10, 2023.

Final score: 4 out of 5
