A Conversation with Dan Deacon, Electronic Musician and Film Score Composer

Part of my Sundance coverage included interviewing Dan Deacon. Dan created the film score for three 2021 Sundance premieres: Strawberry Mansion; All Light, Everywhere; and Philly D.A

In our conversation, we talk about his background, his process when film scoring (and how it's different than composing music made for listening alone), and a bizarre story about a crazy night he spent with Francis Ford Coppola at his vineyard. Dan is a highly entertaining guest, and I know you will enjoy this interview as much as I did.

About Dan: Dan Deacon is a Baltimore-based musician and composer known for his innovative and eclectic electronic music and his lively concerts, where he solicits and expects audience participation. His most recent studio album, Mystic Familiar, released in 2020. Besides composing music for listening sake alone, Dan is often hired to composer complete film scores, which is the main subject of this interview. A few examples of his previous film scores include Theo Anthony’s documentaries Rat Film and Subject to Review; Finlay Pretsell’s Time Trial; and Francis Ford Coppola’s fantasy horror film Twixt.
